How to Have an Impactful Quiet Time
What is a Personal Quiet Time?
A personal quiet time is a consistent time you’ve carved out of your schedule each day to spend alone with God.
During this time, you may choose to pray, read your Bible, simply listen for God to speak, worship, or a combination of some/all!
Why Do We Need a Quiet Time?
We know that having a quiet time with God is important for one main reason: Jesus did it.
We see many times in Scripture that “Jesus withdrew to a quiet place and prayed”… And if Jesus, being fully God Himself, knew it was important to get away from the clamor and busyness of life, to be alone with the Father… How much more important is it for us mere humans to do so?
Food for thought!
How Long Should Quiet Time Be?
This all depends on you! Everyone’s quiet time looks different and I personally believe the Lord cares more about the place of your heart than He does about how many minutes you spend alone with Him.
Some people spend 5 minutes per morning (just long enough to read 1-2 scriptures and meditate on them,) while others spend an hour or more!
I suggest sticking to whatever you know you can do consistently each day.
How Do I Get Quiet Before God?
There are many different ways you can get quiet before the Lord. Personally, I have a comfy chair in a corner of one of my spare bedrooms that I withdraw to each morning…
I have it set up with a cozy blanket, a heater, and a basket with my Bible, daily devotional, and Quiet Time Templates.
However, when the weather is nice out, I typically like to sit on my back porch or go for a morning prayer walk.
The most important thing for you to know is this: you should never feel guilty for spending alone time with your Father.
Whether you have kids who keep you busy or a husband you need to tend to in the mornings, it is still incredibly important for you to get alone in the quiet with God first!
Trust me… your loved ones will see a difference and thank you for it later!
If this means getting up an extra 10 minutes early before the rest of your house awakes… do it! 😃 It’ll be beyond worth it because your closeness with God will overflow into every area of your life!
What is the Difference Between Meditation and Quiet Time?
While there are many different types of meditation, the most common in today’s society is the attempt to attain some sort of a higher sense of spirituality.
While some types of meditation can help you become more present in the current moment, which can reduce anxiety… It is important that we don’t meditate without the Lord being a part.
As Christians, we are not called to be a part of any type of spirituality that doesn’t involve Christ.
The Bible does tell us to “meditate on scripture,” which really means focusing on it and letting it lead us in life.
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” — Joshua 1:8
How Can I Connect to God Daily?
How Do You Prioritize God in Your Life?
Prioritizing God daily really comes down to time management.
Life is busy… for almost everyone these days!
So the most important thing to do is take a look at your schedule and decide where you can schedule in a consistent alone time with God each day.
Once you’ve schedule this, make it a priority… because you know how the power of quiet time is going to benefit your life!
The bottom line is… We make time for what is important to us. So just decide; how important is quiet time with God to you?
If it’s important enough, I know you’ll make sure it happens. Even if it’s only for 5-10 minutes per day!
It can also be helpful to use a daily quiet time devotional to help you stay on track!
How Can You Make Time for God With a Busy Schedule?
Time blocking is a wonderful thing to practice because it enables you to pack almost everything you want to do into your daily schedule.
Here’s how to time block in a nutshell:
Take a blank calendar (or pull up a blank calendar in Google calendars!)
First… write down every single thing you HAVE to do each day and include how long it takes.
Then… write in the things you desire to make priorities! (AKA your quiet time with God, kids’ soccer games, time to exercise, etc.)
Lastly… fill in the other small things you need to do each day.
If you’ve got your entire schedule worked around spending some time with God every day, then there’s no way you’re going to miss it!
Just make sure you say “no” when other things try to get in the way! (The devil is really sneaky with trying to make sure other things pop up so that we don’t think we have time to spend with God!)
Stand firm on your priorities and remember why you scheduled them in the first place.
How Do You Spend Time with God Throughout the Day?
Every car ride is an opportunity to spend time with God… Whether you’re blasting worship music like I do (and singing very unpleasantly😂) to God, or just praying while you drive…
Either way is a wonderful use of your time!
Another trick of the trade is to replace your thoughts with prayers!
I teach you more about what this means, as well as other ways to spend time with God throughout the day, in my post that talks about 5 Practical Ways to Become a Prayer Warrior.
