Healthy Grocery Shopping 101
The Main Goal When Healthy Grocery Shopping
The main goal when healthy grocery shopping is to buy the LEAST processed food + the food with the LEAST chemicals as possible.
Healthy Grocery Shopping: Buying Organic
In order to get foods with the least chemicals, you typically want to try and buy organic.
“What does ORGANIC even mean and why is it such a big deal?!” Long story short…
Many farmers put pesticides on their crops so that less of their crops will be harmed by pests. This means they can sell more crops, and thus, make more money. These pesticides are not healthy for us to eat.
Many farmers also inject their livestock with unhealthy hormones and antibiotics to make the animals bigger, which creates more meat that the farmers can sell. These hormones and antibiotics are not healthy for us to eat.
In addition, preservatives are added to many foods to increase their shelf life. Longer shelf life = less wasted food = more money in the producer’s pockets. These preservatives are not healthy for us to eat.
This is why it’s best to eat organic foods, when possible.
Organic food costs more money since the companies producing the organic foods are not making as much money (the way the other farmers/companies who use pesticides, antibiotics, preservatives, and other chemicals do)…
But the trade-off is well worth it for your health!
Healthy Grocery Shopping: Buying Less Processed
All food is processed (handled) to some degree, but we want to buy food that is in its’ most NATURAL STATE as possible.
AKA we want it to be the closest thing to how it grew on the earth as possible.
We also want to buy items that have a very SHORT ingredients list on the nutrition label. If you start to see a bunch of long words that look like they could be a different language… ABORT MISSION!
Added Tip: Try and avoid products with more than a few grams of ADDED sugar. (Always check the nutrition label.)
*NOTE: Added sugar is not the same thing as just sugar. (Healthy whole foods such as fruit have sugar in them.)
On the back of a nutrition label, you’ll see “total sugars” and then you’ll see “added sugars.” You need to look at the ADDED sugars — try and keep those low (anything higher than 5-10g. per serving is high in my personal opinion.)
