A Bold Prayer for Discipline and Self Control in Life

February 24, 2023 · In: Spiritual Growth

This post includes an encouraging prayer for discipline.

If you’re looking for a prayer for self control and discipline, this post has you covered! Discipline is a key characteristic we all need in life in order to grow and live out our full potential God has called us to.

The Lord has very specific purposes for you (yes, you!) in this life and, if you choose discipline, He can better use you as an instrument to live out those purposes!

Personally, I’ve struggled with discipline myself in the past and I’ve seen God work and bring me the discipline I needed through prayer!

The prayer for self discipline below is here to help guide you as you seek the Lord’s help in this area. Feel free to pray it verbatim or use it to come up with your own words.

I hope you’re encouraged by this prayer for discipline.

PRAYER FOR DISCIPLINE

A Short Prayer for Discipline

Dear Heavenly Father,

I ask You to fill me with the self-discipline to stay on track with ___________. I need your Holy Spirit to remind me of why I started this in the first place, and give me the desire to stick with it and not give up.

I want to be a good steward of my body, my time, and my resources… All gifts from You!

I ask forgiveness for the times I haven’t chosen discipline, and I thank You and praise You for all You’ve given me!

Help me to control my flesh in the hard moments when I’d rather choose the easy way out over choosing discipline. In those moments, remind me of the reward on the other side of my discipline.

I cannot do this without You, and I need Your help. Thank You for being with me and I receive Your discipline into my life and heart right now!

In Jesus’ name,

Amen!

Your Questions About Discipline Answered

Why is Discipline Important to God?

When we demonstrate discipline in our lives, it means we are stewarding what God has given us well. This can mean choosing discipline in your health and fitness, your finances, or any other area of your life.

God is the One who’s given you those gifts (your body, your income, etc.) and, because of that, you’re called to steward each of them well.

Stewarding what God gives you well shows the Lord respect, and we see in Scripture that whoever is faithful with little, is given much. (Luke 16:10.)

If you want more blessing in your life, more responsibility (example: a promotion), more friendships, or more of any other good thing… You must first have the discipline to do well with what God has already given you.

What Scripture Talks About Discipline?

There are countless Bible verses about discipline, as well as so many stories that allude to discipline being the main moral of the story.

For example, when Moses chose to follow his flesh by killing a man, instead of choosing discipline, he ended up living in the wilderness for years.

If you’re looking for scriptures to pray for discipline, definitely check out the ones linked in the paragraph above. Declare them over yourself by inserting “I” and “me” into them!

Who in the Bible Showed Discipline?

So many great people in the Bible showed discipline…

Because Noah chose the discipline to stay strong and follow God’s command to build the ark, the entire world was blessed.

Because Jesus chose discipline in literally everything He did, we have every single miracle story recorded in scripture.

Paul, Timothy, and Silas chose the discipline to continue preaching the Gospel, even when they were being persecuted.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, chose the discipline to raise the Son of God, who ended up dying for all of our sins.

Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father, chose the discipline to stay with Mary and help raise Jesus, even through persecution.

…. We could go on and on like this for days!

How Do I Ask God for Discipline?

The biggest thing to remember when coming to God for anything is that you don’t have to use big or fancy words for God to hear you or listen to you. He just wants your heart.

Literally saying the words “God, please give me discipline” is enough!

However, you will see that when you begin talking to God just like a friend in the room with you, your relationship with Him grows. You will begin trusting Him more and feeling His presence.

How Do You Pray for Self Control?

Self control is a fruit of the spirit, basically meaning that it is a gift we are given as followers of Jesus with the Holy Spirit living inside of us!

Therefore, we don’t necessarily have to ask for it, because God says we already have it!

All we need to do is receive it, and practice it. So, asking God to help you practice and even strengthen your self control is a very practical way to go about praying for it.
