This post is all about reasons God wants you to be healthy!
Are you wondering how to be a healthy Christian or if being healthy as a Christian is even important? I used to wonder the same thing, as God began convicting my heart of some unhealthy habits I needed to get out of my life.
In this post, I’m going to answer two of the biggest questions I get as a Christian fitness coach:
“What does the Bible say about being healthy?” and “what does God say about the physical body?”
I guarantee you’ll leave here with some clarity and a deeper sense of understanding why you may be feeling convicted about taking better care of your physical health and fitness.

God Wants You to Be Healthy: All You Need to Know
What Does God Say About Living a Healthy Life?
Does God Want Us to Be Healthy?
This is such a controversial topic, but I’ll put it this way: From all I’ve collected through reading scripture, it is very clear that God intends for us to take care of our bodies and do all that we can on our part to keep them healthy. (More on that below!)
However, the fact of the matter is that for some reason the Lord allows people to get sick and, oftentimes, sick in ways that are out of their control, regardless of how well they take care of their bodies.
BUT, that doesn’t mean we don’t still do what we can to prevent illness from happening!
So, for example, saying something like “well, diabetes just runs in my family. I’m sure I’ll get it at some point….” and then going on to eat whatever you want and doing nothing to prevent it from happening, is not God’s intention for you.
You can absolutely be the person in your family line to break the generational curse of whatever has taunted the family members before you. All you have to do is pray for the curse to be broken in Jesus’ name, trust the Lord, and take action to create a healthy lifestyle! (Faith without works is dead! James 2:26)
Does God Want Us to Be Physically Fit?
He does! Being physically fit is typically just a byproduct of a healthy lifestyle. Read this list of healthy living Bible verses if you’re curious exactly what the Word says on this topic!
Here is a sermon on health and wellness by the fabulous Joyce Meyer, and she explains how to be a healthy Christian and the importance of fitness perfectly!
Also check out this prayer for good health from the Bible!
Does God Want Us to Eat Healthy?
God does want us to eat healthy! We can see this simply by looking at what He created for us to eat…. “And what did He create for us to eat,” you ask? Whole foods!
God created every whole food on the planet, and these are the most nutritious things we can put in our bodies!
Whole foods are simply any foods that ever breathed, swam, or had roots.
What is God’s Prescription for a Healthy Life?
The Bible gives us tons of practical scriptures that can help us make healthy lifestyle choices, however, it tells us that the Word of God is the ultimate prescription! worry about your healthYou’re not called to , but rather, to rely on God’s Word and pray.
Proverbs 4:20-23 – “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.”

5 Reasons God Wants You to Be Healthy and Fit
1. YOU CAN DO MORE FOR THE KINGDOM.
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.” — Proverbs 31:17
The Proverbs 31 woman was no weak gal. If you dive into Proverbs 31 a bit, you can see she was a woman of strength discipline, loyalty, and hard work… And to be a hard working woman “strong for your tasks,” you must be taking good care of your body, right?
Right! 😃
2. IT GIVES GOD GLORY.
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31
You can use your fitness journey to lead others to Jesus and give God glory!
3. A STRONG, HEALTHY BODY = A MORE STRONG, HEALTHY MIND THAT CAN STAND BOLD AGAINST THE ENEMY’S SCHEMES.
“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” — John 3:12
This verse makes it clear to us that the mind and body are so connected! And if our body is well, then our mind is well. And if our mind is well, then we can stand against the enemies lies and do more for God’s Kingdom!
4. DISCIPLINING YOUR BODY THROUGH PHYSICAL FITNESS GIVES YOU MORE SELF DISCIPLINE IN ALL OTHER AREAS OF LIFE (INCLUDING AGAINST SIN.)
“But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” — 1 Corinthians 9:27
This verse shows us that we must learn to discipline our bodies… And that choosing discipline is a choice. I always tell my clients in my group coaching program that “motivation is a fleeting feeling that comes and goes, but discipline is a choice!”
5. YOUR BODY IS A TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” — 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
As Christians, we’re called to respect our bodies because:
#1. They are a gift from God.
#2. They are the place where the Holy Spirit lives! (!!!!!!)
Any time I find this difficult, I just think about what Christ did for me on the cross. And how dare I disrespect that or show a lack of appreciation by treating my body poorly… This life is a gift from God, and I need to show God my appreciation by treating my body well!
