This post is all about finding your identity in Christ.
Do you ever struggle to know who you really are? Perhaps it even seems like all the other women around you are able to walk confidently in their identity… but not you?
You feel like your personality changes from day to day and you may even be struggling with making decisions or knowing what you believe? If so, you’re not alone, sister.
I’ve been there, and so have thousands of other women… And the truth is, the root cause of this problem is this: a lack of knowing who you truly are in Christ.
The good news? I overcame this and so can you. ☺️
In this post, I’m going to help you understand how to step into your new identity in Christ. I’ll even include access to my “My Identity in Christ” PDF so you can print it and declare what God says about you every day! *You can grab that free printable at the bottom of this post!*

Finding Your Identity in Christ
Why is it Important to Know Your Identity in Christ?
Once you really find your identity in Jesus, you won’t struggle with feeling like you’re constantly wavering with the winds of life.
You’ll be able to walk more confidently, second guess yourself much less, and stand firm on what you believe in (without the constant worry of what others think.)
What Does it Mean to Find Your Identity in Christ?
“What is identity in Christ?” This is such a common question and the perception of this term oftentimes has a lot of “fluff” added to it… But the truth is, understanding who you are in Christ is quite simple:
Finding your identity in Christ simply means that you understand who God created you to be.
This fallen world has countless ways of deceiving us into believing notions that are untrue about ourselves and deceptions that make us believe we are not good enough for God…
Whether it’s lies that you come up with in your own brain due to trauma or words that have been spoken over you by your peers.
As Christians, we must stand against these lies of the enemy so that we can dismantle them, strip ourselves of them, and instead, clothe ourselves in the truths Christ has declared over us.
Because we live in a tainted world with an enemy of our souls who is constantly attempting to destroy us and steal our God-given identity from us, this is no easy process.
It takes daily effort. It requires us to live on the offense, rather than on the defense. We have to be proactive in filling our souls with the truths God gives us about our identities, if we want to fully walk in them.
And that’s exactly what the following steps are going to show you how to do. ☺️
Ready to fight, sis?
Let’s do this.
How Do You Discover Your True Identity in Christ?
If you’re wondering “how do I reclaim my identity in Christ,” follow the 3 steps below!
Step #1 to Finding Your Identity in Christ: Identify Who You’re NOT
Identifying who you are not is the first step in finding who you truly are.
So, I’m going to take you through a little exercise… And I must warn you, this may sting a little bit. But, it’s necessary.
This exercise is called “Truths Vs. Lies.”
And it’s powerful.
So the first step in this process is to…
- Grab a piece of paper…
- On the paper, draw 2 columns.
- Label the first column “Truths” and the second column “Lies.”
Then, the first thing I want you to do is write down every single negative thought you have about yourself in the “Lies” column.
Yep…
I want you to list every single (untrue) idea that goes through your brain about yourself, whether it’s “my hair is ugly,” “no-one will ever want to marry me,” or “I have no purpose.”
Whatever those thoughts are that eat you up inside… And make you feel defeated or unlovable…
I want you to get them ALL out.
Don’t judge your thoughts. Don’t concern yourself with how “silly” you may think some of these things sound.
Just get them out.
Okay… Got your list?
Moving on! 😀
Step #2 to Finding Your Identity in Christ: Replace the Lies with the Truths
Now that we’ve unveiled the lies that could potentially prevent us from believing the truth about ourselves… We can correct those lies by replacing them with God’s Truth. (AKA: Our TRUE identity.)
Here’s what you need to do now:
For every single thought in the “Lies” column, I want you to Google search “Bible verses about _____” (in a new tab.)
For example, if one of the lies on your list was “I am ugly.” I want you to search the term “Bible verses about my appearance.”
Do that for each lie and in its’ coordinating “Truths” column, write down the truth of what Scripture says about that thought! Be sure and include the scripture citation as this will help your soul believe that it’s true, since there’s even more proof that God’s Word says it!
You don’t have to write down the entire scripture… you can even just write a part of it that stands out to you.
Once you’re done… move on to Step 3 for finding your identity in Christ.
Step #3 to Finding Your Identity in Christ: Create Your Personalized Biblical Affirmations List
Okay, now we have our list of the lies we’ve been believing about ourselves (our FALSE identity)… We’ve corrected the thoughts with what God’s Word actually says about those aspects of us (our TRUE identity)…
“But how do I make myself actually believe those things are true?”
You may be thinking, “Sydney… I know what the Bible says… but I just can’t make myself believe it.”
Not to fret, my dear! This is where the real soul work comes in. ☺️
Here’s what I want you to do next:
Grab another sheet of paper. And have your “Truths Vs. Lies” sheet in hand as well.
On your new sheet of paper, start taking your Truths and turning them into affirmations you will eventually declare over yourself. The formula for this is simple:
“I am ___________.” (Insert what Scripture says about you!)
*You may use my Identity in Christ Bible study PDF found here in my Free Resource Library for help! You may even want to use some of the affirmations directly from that list.*
So here’s a full example:
Lie: No-one loves me.
What I searched on Google: “Bible verses about being loved.”
Truth (From Scripture): “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8.
My Affirmation: “I am so loved that Christ died for me!”
Do this exercise for each phrase on your Truths list until you have an entire list of powerful affirmations about your true identity in Christ!
How Do You Live in Your Identity in Christ?
Now that you have your Biblical list of truths about yourself… Claim them over yourself each and every single day! What I actually want you to do is:
-
Put your affirmations list in your bathroom near your mirror.
-
Each morning when you get out of bed, look at yourself in the mirror and say OUT LOUD each and every affirmation, as you are looking at yourself in your own eyes. (There is a scientific connection behind being affirmed while being looked directly in the eyes, even by yourself.)
-
Any time you hear an untruth about yourself throughout your day, whether it’s from your own inner critique or it’s from the people around you… I want you to declare the TRUTH that is your identity instead.
Say to yourself… “no, that is NOT who God says I am. I am _______.” (And say it out loud in the devil’s ears!)
The longer you say these affirmations consistently each day, the more they will become engrained in your mind!
This exercise takes some time to work (honestly, it could take months or even years.) But it will only get better and better each and every day that you put the effort into it!
