This post is all about CrossFit hairstyles!
Are you looking for CrossFit competition hairstyles or some cute gym hairstyles for training? I know as a CrossFit athlete and personal trainer myself, a lot of times I get bored with my plain ‘ole top knot and want to do something a little different and cute!
With that being said, if you do CrossFit (or any other high intensity type of exercise), you know how important it is that your hair: 1. Is out of your face and 2. Will actually stay in place during your workout…
Because nothing is more annoying during a WOD than having your hair fall out and hang in your eyeballs or mouth. 😂
These cute easy hairstyles for girls and women can also serve as powerlifting hairstyles, or any other sport you may be a part of!
I hope you love these CrossFit hairstyles.

CrossFit Hairdos for Long Hair
These easy long hairstyles are perfect for keeping your long luscious locks out of your way during your training!
1. THIN BRAID INTO BRAIDED LOW PONYTAIL
View this post on Instagram
This hairstyle really is as simple (while still adorable) as it looks!
HOW TO:
- Start with brushing all of your hair directly backward, away from your face.
- Take a small portion of hair to one of the sides of your face and French braid it backward all the way to where you want the starting point of your ponytail to be. (Here is a Youtube tutorial if you need to learn to French braid! I personally taught myself from Youtube and it was pretty easy!)
- Tie it with a small elastic.
- Insert your hair tie and pull your ponytail tight.
- “Regular” braid your ponytail and end with another small elastic.
2. DOUBLE FRENCH BRAIDS
This is a pretty typical CrossFit hairstyle, but it never gets old and always looks cute!
HOW TO:
- Use a comb with a point to part your hair directly down the middle, all the way to the bottom of your hair.
- French braid each side.
- Tie each end with a small elastic.
3. LAYERED PONYTAIL “POM-POMS”
I’ve seen the pom-pom trend more and more lately and I’m so here for it! It’s seriously so easy to do, but adds such fun character to your ponytail.
HOW TO:
- Brush all of your hair directly backwards, away from your face.
- Take the top third portion of your hair and tie it back with a small clear elastic hair tie.
- Take the next layer of hair down (another third) and pull it into the ponytail, tying it with another elastic.
- Gently tug on the sides of the tied portion to give it the puffy “pom-pom” look.
- Follow step 3 with the bottom third of your hair.
- Add additional elastics all the way down the pony and give each section a gentle tug for the pom-pom effect.
You can also do this without separating your hair into layers! To do this, simply put your hair in one ponytail, add elastics all the way down and then gently tug on each section to give them the pom-pom look.
4. DOUBLE DUTCH BRAIDS INTO PIGTAILS
Dutch braids are a fun way to switch things up if you want something different than a normal French braid. It’s basically a French braid inside out and is actually super easy to do!
HOW TO:
- For this look, start with parting your hair with the point of your comb.
- Next, Dutch braid each side. Here is a video on how to do a Dutch braid.
- Stop the braids at the bottom of your hair line with a larger elastic (I like these because they’re clear) and pull tight.
5. HIGH MESSY PONYTAIL WITH PIECES PULLED OUT

In a hurry and need a quick CrossFit hairstyle that still looks insanely cute? This look is for you.

6. TOP BRAID INTO LOW PONY
If your hair is super curly, sometimes the best and easiest thing to do it just to rock those curls, sis! Throwing your hair in a tight, low pony allows for your curls to show, while keeping them out of your face.
Add either a Dutch, French, or Fishtail braid to the top for an even more fun look!
HOW TO:
- Braid the top.
- Ponytail the rest!
7. SIMPLE LOW BUN WITH HEADBAND

A super easy way to add a little character to any ‘do (as well as extra hair support to keep it out of your face) is by adding a thin sports headband.
HOW TO:
- Place the headband in your hair.
- Pull the lower portion into a messy bun.
*PRO TIP: Push forward on the headband, from the back of it. This gives the front hair (near your forehead) a bit of a bump, instead of it being so flat against your head.
8. TOP FISHTAIL BRAID INTO PONYTAIL
Fishtail is another unique braid you can always use for your CrossFit hairstyles that will keep your hair out of your face, while standing out from the crowd.
HOW TO:
- Fishtail the top half of your hair. This video will show you how to Fishtail if you need to learn!
- Put the rest of your hair in a ponytail, and pull it tight.
- *Optional*: Wrap a small piece of your hair around your hair tie and tuck it into the hair tie to give it the look Katrin has in this photo!

CrossFit Competition Hairstyles
The CrossFit hairstyles below are particularly great for competitions because they are extra tight and are even less likely to fall down, even after multiple workouts throughout the day!
12. DOUBLE FRENCH BRAID INTO DOUBLE BRAIDED BUNS
This is a perfect hairstyle for a CrossFit competition, especially if you know you’re going to be there all day and want something extra secure to keep your hair totally out of the way!
HOW TO:
- Use the point of your comb to part your hair.
- French braid each side all the way to the ends of your hair.
- Tie each side with a small elastic.
- Wrap each braid around and around in circles until it forms a “ball.”
- Use a larger clear elastic hair tie to wrap around each bun and hold it securely in place.
13. TIGHT THIN BRAIDS INTO PONYTAIL
I absolutely love this sleek, sporty look… Especially for CrossFit competitions!
HOW TO:
- Brush all of your hair back, away from your face.
- Use the point of your comb to part your hair into 3-4 sections (depending on how many braids you want.)
- French braid each portion with very thin sections of hair. Make sure these braids are extremely tight and every “pull” of your braid is taken all the way down to the scalp to ensure this cornrows-look.
- Tie each individual braid with a small elastic.
- Use a larger clear elastic hair tie to put the rest of your hair in a ponytail. Pull it tight!
14. TOP DUTCH BRAID INTO PONYTAIL
This CrossFit hairstyle is perfect for hot days when you want your hair up on top of your head… Not to mention, it looks extra cool if you have highlights in your hair!
HOW TO:
- Dutch braid the top portion of your hair.
- Use an elastic (I prefer these larger clear elastics) to stop your braid and start your ponytail!
- Pull it tight and go rock your workout!
How to Do a Bun Hairstyle for CrossFit
There are several different types of buns you can do for CrossFit training or CrossFit competitions, but the most important thing is to make sure it’s tight enough to where it won’t fall out!
The top knot demo below is super easy, but ensures that your hair will stay put.
To ensure tightness in my buns, I like to use these Cutie Bands from Ryan and Rose because they actually hold your hair in place, unlike many other ponytail holders I’ve tried! (I have insanely thick hair that is very heavy, and these are some of the only ones my hair won’t fall down in!)
